Just checked the media info for the file and I get this

Video
ID : 1
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile :
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames
Format settings, GOP : N=1
Muxing mode : Header stripping
Codec ID : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC
Duration : 1mn 9s
Bit rate : 1 608 Kbps
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 040 pixels

The Bit rate has changed from 9664 to 1068.

I've not checked playing the file yet as I don't have access to my ps3 yet.

Althought bitrate may be lower, I'm guessing because it's just a very short sample. I tried playing the sample on my ps3 and it has the same issue as the full video so whatever is causing my issue should still be present.

I've taken a look at the file and can't understand why it doesn't play. I too have profile 4.1 Reframe 5 and they play fine. I did some re-encoding of the file and dropping the reframe level to 3 works but you do get the 'low ram' message. Which means there is something else in the file that is stopping the video from playing when at reframe 5.

If its just the file Monsters Inc I would go ahead and re-encode it. But it must be something to do with the same problem as mp4 files Profile 4.1 not playing in Showtime.

Try to extract all tracks and remux it with an update version of mkvmerge.

Your video profile is good, and bitrate not too high (I play much more higher), but you have this header stripping option. See #646

I tried remuxing with the latest mkvmerge but still no luck for me.

I seem to be experiencing the same issue with an mp4 (h.264/AAC). I'm brand new to bug reporting here, so if someone can tell me how I can create a report of the video info and how I can create a sample, then I'll gladly do it. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that for my issue, the video actually seems to freeze itself once the video starts playing, so for example, when I first start playing the video, the screen will be black but the audio continues to play. When I stop the video and resume playing it, the screen will actually show a freeze frame of the video at the resume point while the audio continues to play.

Sorry, I completely missed this comment. Please disregard and/or delete my comments if there is already an open bug regarding mp4s. Thanks.

I too see this issue in some 1080p clips.
remuxing with different version of mkv without 'header compression' doesn't cut it either.

not sure, but maybe something regarding L4.1.
1920x1080p with 4 reFrames --- OK
1918x1040p with 5 reFrames --- BAD

both are 'legal' 4.1, but the latter won't play.

  • Target version set to 4.0

  • Status changed from New to Rejected

There is just probably something that makes it incompatible with the level restriction
I've no idea what it can be :-(
