Showtime crash with new and clean Gentoo system

Added by ramaza - about 10 years ago

I have switched from Ubuntu to Gentoo for further work on a Showtime optimized standalone client. I am quite new to Gentoo but until now it answered my expectations and everything worked quite straightforward after reading some docs.

Compiling worked without much problems after installing some libraries. X-Server works and OpenGL acceleration was successfully tested with glxgears. Perhaps it's important to mention that this test system only has a root user at the moment and also no graphical user interface or display manager at all. Just naked X-Server.

My problem is that Showtime crashes very hard at startup after showing the GUI for a second.

Here is the ./configure output:

I would be happy if someone has a hint for me! Or should I file a bug?

I've pushed some code to master that should help pinpoint the problem. (ie, it's not a fix) but please try anyway

RE: Showtime crash with new and clean Gentoo system - Added by Andreas Smas about 10 years ago

The problem is that Showtime is not tested with non-vector (ie bitmap) fonts and then it crashes.

Freetype [DEBUG]: Loaded 'Helvetica' [Regular] from file:///usr/share/fonts/75dpi/helvR12-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz

Try to install some truetype fonts

I will look into fixing this though

RE: Showtime crash with new and clean Gentoo system - Added by ramaza - about 10 years ago

Yeah, it works. Thanks!!!

I think Gentoo was a good choice for Showtime:
  • fast booting directly into Showtime
  • VDPAU acceleration
  • minimal disk space
  • standby seems to work
  • easy configuration (if familiar with Linux internals)

I would like to publish a how-to and later on an USB-Live-Image for Showtime on Atom+ION based systems. Would this be helpful to you, Andreas?

Ramaza

I`d be interested in a guide to installing showtime on a gentoo system. I think a gentoo/showtime distro would be perfect. Here is my input ShowToo (I can only manage a name as my linux skills are crap)

Cheers Tom

Hi Tom,

I am already testing my "ShowToo" system. I am quite happy with it except some problems with video decoding performance.

I am only building and testing with Nvidia ION and ION2 systems. I don't know if this is something you are happy with but my instructions should be mostly compatible with other hardware.

Franz

Im very keen to get this running mate I have a revo 3610 sat here just waiting to become a showtime frontend. My tvheadend server is currently serving xbmc-pvr but I like the simple look of showtime. If you could send me your instructions to running showtime on gentoo I`d be made up. I have used the revo with xbmc live which comes with tvheadend and a usb dvb-s2 box. Works well but recording is fooked.

Cheers Tom

I am starting a new thread in the forum with my instructions as soon as they are ready for public view. At the moment they are only notes for myself. I am afraid you wouldn't be able to understand my personal notes.

But you could download my gentoo usb files for testing. These are only 330MB and quite easy to install on usb-stick. It's not finished and far away from being perfect. It's just for testing if your hardware is compatible with my kernel.

With a little bit of luck you can already get some Showtime feeling with it :-)

Regards,
Franz

Cheers Tom

BTW I cant understand much lol let alone your notes

I have created a new thread for further discussion of the Gentoo+Showtime on USB stick because it's off-topic here.
