Movie metadata
Added by Andreas Smas over 11 years ago
I wanted to start a discussion around metadata for movies. There's a bunch of things that needs to be straighten out before I go and implement stuff.
- How does people (in general) organize their movies?
Is it one folder per movie?
Are there any images (movie posters, etc) in that folder?
- How does people (in general) organize their TV shows?
One folder with the show and then one more folder with seasons that contain episodes?
- Does anyone have experience with how this works with UPNP/DLNA servers that tends to organize stuff by itself? Or does people mostly use the UPNP/DLNA server in "folder mode" (just browse folder over upnp as they appear on disk)
- What about additional tagging of content. Are there text files that contain IMDB IDs, etc?
- Are there some kind of "standard" of all these things?
All in all, any suggestions around these topics is important when it comes to getting this feature to do the "right thing"
Thanks,
Andreas

No, all my movies are in one folder.
Are there any images (movie posters, etc) in that folder?
No, as there was no point having posters etc as Showtime doesn't support images etc. But I do have covers ready (compiled using EMDB which scans my NAS drive and grabs covers for all my files then stores them). So when Showtime starts to support covers I'll place them where-ever is needed.

Yes, one folder with the Show name then inside 'Season 1' etc with episodes.

I'm guessing it's folder mode as nothing is organised automatically, I place movies in the video folder, music in the music folder etc.
- What about additional tagging of content. Are there text files that contain IMDB IDs, etc?
No, nothing like that contained with my files but EMDB will let me gather all that information if needed.
- Are there some kind of "standard" of all these things?
I like to keep things simple by just having the movie files. I think most programs search by title then assign it an IMDB which then gathers all the artwork etc. If you notice a movie is given the wrong IMBD there is always an option to search for the correct film and update the artwork.
All in all, any suggestions around these topics is important when it comes to getting this feature to do the "right thing"
Thanks for starting to look into this area!
Thanks,
Andreas

Talking of general everyone follows their own comfort arrangement, but I have seen and follow the below mentioned organization.

- One folder per movie.
The folder consists of all data required to be presented for the movie, ie. Images, Covers and IMDB data as .NFO.
But, I wouldn't want to see the these extra files when I am browsing through the movie list. They should just be there hidden or not listed by showtime.
For purposes as to display custom choice of images as cover art, this method would be appropriate.
- How does people (in general) organize their TV shows?
One folder with the show and then one more folder with seasons that contain episodes?
- One folder with the "Season.X" Folder and each folder containing all the season episodes.
Each season should have a single cover art defining the season.
Each episode should display stills from the video and display that as Thumbnail Art
- Does anyone have experience with how this works with UPNP/DLNA servers that tends to organize stuff by itself? Or does people mostly use the UPNP/DLNA server in "folder mode" (just browse folder over upnp as they appear on disk)
- Currently use the 'Folder Mode'.
The negative is, we have to enter the folder to play the video.
- Prefer to use an 'Album Mode' once the metadata is sorted and available correctly. ex. containing - Genre, Date, Actor etc.
The positive is, all videos will be presented after metadata filtering, and then we can directly play the video.
- What about additional tagging of content. Are there text files that contain IMDB IDs, etc?
- Generally a ".nfo" file is generated to present all data from IMDB including IDs.
- Prefer to have a central repository that Showtime handles all the metadata for itself. But Showtime should give higher priority to existing files in the movie folder if any exist.
- Are there some kind of "standard" of all these things?

- Every media player that supports metadata seem to work in their own standard, but the above mentioned details I have seen as standard in majority of the media players.
But Showtime is NOT about standard, it's about different! :)

For videos and TV Shows i have all movie files (including srt/sub subtitles) in the same folder in a NAS (with DLNA and SAMBA).
Then i use Personal Video Database for automatic movie cataloging (http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/). Very good software!
Does anyone have experience with how this works with UPNP/DLNA servers that tends to organize stuff by itself? Or does people ovmostly use the UPNP/DLNA server in "folder mode" (just browse folder er upnp as they appear on disk)
My DLNA server is TwonkyMediaServer 6.0.30 and it's something like this
1º level: Music/Image/Video
2º level: By folder/By Year/By Rating/By Date/etc
3+º level: The files or an additional folder (ex: in By Date, By Year - By Month)
I do the following: In my computer, i choose, using Personal Video Database, the movie. Then, in showtime in PS3 since i don't have the movie information, i use DLNA "Video" "By Date" and choose the year of that movie to filter the results.
What about additional tagging of content. Are there text files that contain IMDB IDs, etc?

I don't know any standard, all metadata is in Personal Video Database database (paths, codec, covers, screenshots, imdb, boxoffice, actors, taglines, etc) witch has some great plugins for fetching information from movie databases.

One folder per movice, usually no images in the folder, just the movie as whole or parts.
The movie folders are described with the name, release year.

Yes I have one folder per movie.
Are there any images (movie posters, etc) in that folder?
I used to put the bluray cover for each movie (same filename with different extension) but now that showtime scrapes meta data, I stopped doing it. I did notice that wrong movie images appear but I'm guessing it's because the filename is not cleaned up. I'll keep the nfo file if I have it but I usually get rid of everything else. Any subtitles I will mux it back into the mkv container.

Yes, I have one folder for the TV show name and inside there I have a folder for each season.

I've only used folder mode.

I don't tag in any way but I did create a folder for 3D vs 2D content. It would be nice to tag 3D content somehow so it can differentiate it in the UI...1080 vs 720p indicator would be nice as well.

Firstly I just wanted to say thanks, showtime is fantastic!
I wanted to start a discussion around metadata for movies. There's a bunch of things that needs to be straighten out before I go and implement stuff.
How does people (in general) organize their movies?
Is it one folder per movie?
Are there any images (movie posters, etc) in that folder?
I have my movies split by genre, action/adventure, drama, animation, family, thriller/horror, comedy, doco and finally unwatched for new movies. No images or extra information in folders, just the movie file.
How does people (in general) organize their TV shows?
One folder with the show and then one more folder with seasons that contain episodes?
Yes, I have my tv set up in the manner with one difference. I use a "current" folder for shows that are currently airing week to week
Does anyone have experience with how this works with UPNP/DLNA servers that tends to organize stuff by itself? Or does people mostly use the UPNP/DLNA server in "folder mode" (just browse folder over upnp as they appear on disk)
I only use folder mode
What about additional tagging of content. Are there text files that contain IMDB IDs, etc?
I dont do any tagging
Are there some kind of "standard" of all these things?
All in all, any suggestions around these topics is important when it comes to getting this feature to do the "right thing"
Thanks,
Andreas

For movies I have:
1 folder per movie with the cover art inside
For TV Shows I have:
2 folders
1 per show and another for each season
although ones that got cancelled early / 1 season i just have it in one folder
cover art for the movies is alrigt at the moment it is a pity that it doesnt show when the folder is highlighted
because that would be nice but since for a movie its only one video file so isnt too much of a bother
so my preference for movie cover art would be to be shown when the folder or the video file highlighted one for both
for tv eps its different
my preference if possibile
would be the cover shown when the folders are highlighted and then for the eps to show a thumbnail of the ep
I would love to have some way for showing basic info about each series or movie
even if its not much like in a xml file but something would be quite useful
then leave it to users for copying / pasting or creating a xml/txt file to their preference
