Newbie Guide To Building Showtime

Added by Tom Senior about 10 years ago

Guys really struggling to to build Showtime but would really like to try it out. So my question is would someone out there produce an idiots guide to building showtime for Ubuntu 10.10+. I have tvheadend running with XBMC working as a frontend. I would love to be able to use an underpowered thinclient to use as a frontend but I can`t build showtime. I think an easy to follow tutorial would be really useful for many people. Thanks in advance.

A good start would be to post info (output from configure, etc).

RE: Newbie Guide To Building Showtime - Added by sami abdullah about 10 years ago

Same here on ubuntu 11.04 64bit. I have followed all the steps in the readme file but struggling at ./configure step.
Could you please Andreas tell me what should the configure path be like?

I am doing it like this(I dont know how to insert all directories with the .pc files at the same time in ./configure path)

[email protected]:~/andoma-showtime-2a20940$ ./configure --pkg-config-path=/home/sami/libav/libavcodec
Configuring for Linux environment

Package 'libavcodec' requires 'libavutil = 51.9.0' but version of libavutil is 50.15.1
Using libavcodec: 53.9.0

Please help me.

I followed the instructions at this link and nopw make terminates at another step:

RE: Newbie Guide To Building Showtime - Added by Mattias Wadman about 10 years ago

It guess this error is when you build libav? can you provide us with your gcc version and the configure arguments used to configure libav?
And later if you succeed building libav you should specify the install path to --pkg-config-path when configureing showtime and not point it to the libav source. I guess it will be $PREFIX/lib/pkgconfig where $PREFIX is what you specified to --prefix when configuring libav. If you don't specify a prefix i guess it defaults to /usr/local. Also remember to run "make install" for libav to install it.

RE: Newbie Guide To Building Showtime - Added by sami abdullah about 10 years ago

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

Sorry I did not explain the error well. libav build and installs well. The error above is when I run the command make in showtime directory. Prior to the command make
I configured Showtime with this command:

[email protected]:~/Documents/andoma-showtime-2a20940$ ./configure --pkg-config-path=${HOME}/Documents/libav/libavcodec:${HOME}/Documents/libav/libavformat:${HOME}/Documents/libav/libavutil:${HOME}/Documents/libav/libswscale
Configuring for Linux environment
Using C compiler: cc
Using C++ compiler: c++
Using libavcodec: 53.5.0
Using libavformat: 53.2.0
Using libavutil: 51.7.0
Using libswscale: 2.0.0
Using Freetype2: 12.2.6
Using libfontconfig: 2.8.0
Using libX11: 1.4.2
Using libXext: 1.2.0
Using GLW Frontend: x11

Using GTK Threading: 2.28.6
Using libxscrnsaver: 1.2.1
Using libxxf86vm: 1.1.1
Using libXv: 1.0.6
Using libdbus-1: 1.4.6
Using libcdio_cdda: 0.81
Using libcddb: 1.3.2
Using AVAHI client: 0.6.30
Using openssl: 0.9.8o
Using libvdpau: 0.4.1
Development build.
The generated binary will contain compiled-in paths to
the current build tree. If you plan to install the binary,
please reconfigure with --release.
Final binary is: build.linux/showtime
[email protected]:~/Documents/andoma-showtime-2a20940$

and then command make fails as I posted earlier. In Synaptic it is shown that gcc version 4:4.5.2-1ubuntu3 is installed.
During the buildup of libav, I run this command ./configure --prefix=${PWD} so I did not specify any path. And yes I run make install and libav is installed successfully. So Now I should run this in showtime directory: ./configure --pkg-config-path=$/usr/local/libav/lib/pkgconfig ?
I did but it says:
[email protected]:~/Documents/andoma-showtime-2a20940$ ./configure --pkg-config-path=$/usr/local/libav/lib/pkgconfig
Configuring for Linux environment
Using C compiler: cc
Using C++ compiler: c++
libavcodec 53.0.0 or newer not found.
[email protected]:~/Documents/andoma-showtime-2a20940$

I really believe I am doing something wrong but as I am not a linux expert, I really need more help.

Regards,
Sami

RE: Newbie Guide To Building Showtime - Added by Mattias Wadman about 10 years ago

Hmm i think your libav installs gets mix up somehow.
You should do something like this:
andoma-libav-source-root$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME/showtime-install-env
andoma-libav-source-root$ make clean
andoma-libav-source-root$ make
andoma-libav-source-root$ make install
showtime-source-root$ ./configure --pkg-config-dir=$HOME/showtime-install-env/lib/pkgconfig
showtime-source-root$ make clean
showtime-source-root$ make

If you don't specify --prefix and --pkg-config-dir im quite sure libav will install to /usr/local and pkg-config will default search in /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig any everybody is happy. But it's maybe a good idea to install the showtime version of libav in your home directory somewhere so you dont mess up some other program.

It is working now :) Thank you very much, Mattias.
