500GB USB 2.0 External HDD Unrecognized
Added by MJ Mont almost 11 years ago
Ive been using Showtime on my PS3 for months with 2-16 GB flash drives, but I recently bought a 500GB external HDD because swapping flas drives all the time was a pain. My drive boots when the PS3 does, but the Showtime app does not recognize it. It does not appear anywhere at all. Can someone please help advise me of how to rectify this situation?

Can you make Showtime read media content from shared folders on LAN just like many other HD players do? Because if it can then we wouldn't have to worry about NFTS or FAT format would we?

Thanks, that did the trick. I used Swiss Army Knife v3 to convert the file system to FAT32.

If you use WinRAR to split the file into parts under 4GB each, and set the compression to "store" (which means no compression) then Showtime can read all the parts and display/play it as if it was together still.
This pretty much makes NTFS unnecessary for media, aside from the extra work with WinRAR.
But to be completely honest, I think movie files encoded with >4GB filesizes is a waste of space. You can get rather nice quality around ~2GB per movie in most cases.

@Huy Pham quang: Yes, you can access samba shares. For months, I have been using Showtime to read files on my Popcorn Hour A110 (1tb linux-ext file system).
Best regards

Jorome: What I suggested is an easier to setup and less costly method of sharing media content. Showtime surely can access samba shares but users firstly need to have a samba supported device. Besides, for many non-native english speakers, we ought to edit media contents before watching (muxing subtitle/splitting...) therefore, it is best if developers could make showtime recognise shares folders on Windows. That's gonna save us lot of time copying media from PC to ext HDD.
Rusty Unknown: If you watch on a Tv screen above 50 inches, the differences really shows.

I agree that if we could just share a folder on the local network in windows, and have showtime recognize them it would be super easy to share content.
