Black border around Showtime and movies

Added by Philipp Grosswiler almost 12 years ago

When I start Showtime, the UI is not 100% using the available screen space. There is always a black border around the screen. This includes the playback of any movies. Other homebrew apps don't have this limitation, they can fully use the screen. Anyone else notice that?

Yes, maybe we can keep screen resizing comments in one thread. This is a thread I made about the same thing earlier today.

I am not sure we are describing the same problem. My concern was the screen size used by Showtime UI which seems to be not full screen. Your situation handles the possibility to adjust video playback size, if I understood correctly.

Yes, but since you included this in your post... There is always a black border around the screen. This includes the playback of any movies... I thought that you were talking about the same thing I was.

My apologies.

There is one setting in video settings or something. I can not remember the actual name of it but it's a number. You can adjust it till the UI fits your screen.

That's interesting. Where can I find that video settings?

Shouldn't it be possible to auto detect to screen size and render the UI to use the full size of the screen by default instead?

The setting button is at the right top of the UI. you can navigate to it.

yes i tried that, but i couldnt remove the black bars from left and right sides on a 640x480 mkv

neither the upper and downer black bars on 1920x800 and 1280x532 mp4

are any settings that can solve this?

well, that's another topic related to video aspect ratio. I don't think showtime has an option for that currently. And actually I don't understand why you need that. if the aspect ratio is changed, the video will looks abnormal.

i always prefer the image stretched than these black bars...anyway, hoping to be supported on the next release...

Please everybody check out the Horizontal and Vertical unterscan settings. You can find them in Display and user interface menu. Just set a negative value to remove the black bars.

Yes, those two options do help abit Alex, but yesterday, I spent like 30mins+ with those settings trying to get it right. I got close but not perfect, no matter how much I moved the sliders left or right.

Also, you need to set it manually for different resolutions too, 1080p and 720p not to mention lower res videos, they all need to be tweaked individually.

I wish a simply scale button would be implemented, like the one I posted in the other thread.

Quoting myself...

"Or, another thing that could work is to have a scaling on/off button like on those Vimeo videos. Check the video I posted below, press play > go fullscreen, then on the right side, there is a scaling on/off button. What the scaling button does, it makes the video image touch the edge of the screen from the inside, very much like the option found in MediaPlayClassic (Video Frame + Keep Aspect Ratio ticked + Touch window from the inside).

What about having a button like that? Would that be possible?"

It is indeed possible to make the Showtime UI full screen using the underscan options. It is just a pity it is not doing this automatically. That was my point. But I consider this thread closed with this information. Please take the other issue to Juan Gonzalez's thread, as these are two different matters.

Juan Gonzales

what settings did you use on the sliders, and what resolution were the files?

RE: Black border around Showtime and movies - Added by Juan Gonzales almost 12 years ago

Slider settings: Tried them all.

The content used was:

Cars, LotR 1920x800 (1080p B*)
The Incredibles 1920x808 (1080p B*)
Toy Story 3 1920x1080 (1080p FS*)
Different ones 1280x544 (720p B*)
Tron Legacy 1280x720 (720p FS*)

Also tried lower resolution videos.

*FS = Fullscreen
*B = Borders
