Random Crash or Hang
Added by Ajith Thampi over 11 years ago
I am getting these random crashes/hanging of Showtime where then I have to do a hard reboot.
Do we have some kind of debug dumps generated, so I can post it to you guys for analysis?

Yea that too. When I use goto frame it kinda starts hanging and if I wait too long to exit, showtime hangs completely. Could be some memory or buffer overflow issue. I am not too good at technicals so just my assumption.
Some cases when I playback a lot of HD videos in random, like select, play, return multiple times, showtime starts to lag which ends up in a hang state. Then hard reboot is the only escape.
If showtime could dump the debug state, it would be quite useful in future bug analysis.

I think this is due to various memory leaks but i'm not sure.
I'm gonna add some notifications that pop ups when the system is low on memory. At least then ppl might be able to tell me that this is actually the case.

The hangs are getting painful. I end up have to hard reboot my box most of the time now.
Some cases I have noticed the hang state happening is when i run a few videos one after the another. I always press the "O" button on joypad which exits from the video playback, not the "stop" button from playback controls. Are there any differences between these two from Showtime's point of view?
I keep exiting from all videos being played without actually 'stopping' the video playback. So maybe this could be the reason for memory leaks or buffering. I will try stopping and playing videos to see if thats makes any difference.
Notifications as you suggested would be great. Hoping to see them in your next release.

Took the latest unofficial build .252, and all hang problems persist.
I use the Goto Frame (Seek) option, and it just hangs.
No Notification popped either during playback or before Hang state.

FYI. ver 3.2 still hangs on Goto Frame or Seek during Video Playback. Do we have a issue created for this?

Dont think so. But I can no longer reproduce the issue. I found some problems that I have fixed.
Perhaps it's just happening less frequently :-(

BTW, does this happen if you play from a local USB drive?
I think it's network related somehow.

Hmm, You're correct there. I tested a few videos from the USB, and the Goto/Seek works perfectly. It never caused any lag or hang at all.
So this is definite a case of Showtime not able to Seek correctly from a uPNP media server. This was working flawlessly pre-3.1.128 or older for sure.
Also, the Goto/Seek Frame still lies at start time during playback when it should be at the time of playback.

Yes, but when I increased the networking buffers due to problems when streaming over WIFI it seems these problems surfaced. It seems that the PS3 network stack is a joke.
I'd see if I can come up with a workaround. But it's all wild guesses. I can hardly call Sony and ask for help :-)

I never said that would be fixed.

I can understand the roadblock. Why don't you set buffer based on Network link speed or something? Or perform some pre-cache-ing?
You know better, but just givin' my 0.5cents!
Or how about giving the user the option of setting custom buffers? At least that way we get a chance to experiment buffer requirements?

I know, but just gave it a shot Thought you might throw this in as a bonus for moi!

What an excellent idea!
