Risk of installing showtime?

Added by Scott dude almost 12 years ago

Hey Folks,

I love, love the fact that this program exists. My only concern with installing the app is that Sony will push a firmware upgrade that will look for the program and brick my system. I know nothing in life is guaranteed, but I would like to hear your thoughts on how safe it is to install. I am also aware that the PS3 was totally hacked a few months ago, which I am sure will play into the answer.

Hmm, I'm not sure where you get your information, but first of all the PS3 has been hacked for over a year now. I believe firmware 3.41 was the first time people started running unsigned code.

Anyway, regarding your question -- there is no one on this earth who can give you a guarantee that installing ANY third-party application on your PS3 (whether Showtime or otherwise) is completely safe and runs NO risk of being discovered and penalized by Sony. However, we can say that thousands of people have already done it without any negative consequences. I wouldn't worry about that, but I obviously can't tell you how to feel.

Since you mentioned Sony pushing a firmware upgrade, I would just remember to never upgrade until you're absolutely positive that the upgrade will not affect your current setup. Wait a few days after the update, maybe even a week or two, and read up online to find out what the update actually does, how it has affected people who have already updated, etc. There's no rush. If you do your research and find out the coast is clear, then you go ahead and update no problem. Otherwise, stay on your current firmware. If there is a problem, eventually people will crack it.

Ok, I am in. The usage guide doesn't exactly describe how to install the player. I am sure there is a more detailed guide / post out there somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Can you point me in the right direction?

you need a guide to install the player lol?

I'm going to try and make this simple for you.

Download showtime from here https://github.com/downloads/andoma/showtime/showtime-3.1.126.g35e29.pkg

put it onto usb which is inserted into your computer

take out USB, put it into your PS3

go to install packages files and click x to install.

if you need even more help let me know lol.

I forgot that my flash drive was using NTSF instead of FAT32. The other problem is probably due to the fact that I haven't jail broken my PS3, which I am guessing is a prerequisite.

I'm getting the feeling you are just starting out... you're going to want to read some guides man. Hacking the PS3 is pretty easy, but it's not without its risks, and you have to realize that you will likely not be able to upgrade your firmware as long as you want to keep running programs like Showtime. You need to spend AT LEAST a night or two of doing some serious RESEARCH. Then you'll be fine.

Furthermore, if your PS3 has internet access, there is the likelihood that Sony will ban your console from PSN forever. There are ways around that by using firewalls, etc. Again, consult some forums on this issue if you don't know what's what.

As long as you don't mind the inability to play the newest games that require current firmware, the inability to use any online services, and the potential of getting permabanned from PSN, hacking your PS3 and using Showtime is remarkably safe. Again, like everyone will tell you, there is never a guarantee, especially if you go into the process blind.

In short:
running showtime = near-zero risk.
Hacking your PS3 = potential risk.

This being the Showtime forums, this isn't the best place to ask about hacking PS3s, although obviously we've all done it. Again, check out PSX forums or something similar for guides, and the newest news on what's going down. http://psx-scene.com/forums/latest-news/

@Scott: I just realized that you might not even know that your firmware must be on 3.55 or below to even jailbreak in the first place. So what's your PS3 firmware right now?

If it is 3.55 or below, then this guide might be a good starting point and tutorial for you to follow:
http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/01/tutorial-how-to-play-backups-with-kmeaw-cfwpsn-without-risk-of-brick/#ixzz1BSXS01c8

You really only need to finish up to and including Step 2. You also might prefer to skip step 1 if you just download a pre-patched PUP file from somewhere, but that runs the risk of inadvertently using a bad or malicious file, which is why the tutorial walks you through creating one on your own. Your choice.

Anyway, once you've got your PS3 jailbroken, you can proceed to install the latest version of Showtime using a .pkg file found here:

You didn't even know you was using official firmware? lol

Do you really think Sony would be okay with Showtime?

Do you know why .mkv support wasn't added in the native player? It's because .mkv files are used mainly used for piracy and illegally downloaded films and TV shows.

You don't have a choice to jump in, anything past 3.55 and you never can, unless ofcourse a new CFW comes out, which i wouldn't hold my breath for, there is ways to downgrade 3.70 ofw with Projectskeet, but it's really really advanced.

RE: Risk of installing showtime? - Added by Rusty Unknown almost 12 years ago

This is no longer true. There are new methods for downgrading v3.70 right now, but they require hardware modification (soldering in some wires).

You can find more information/news about hacking your PS3 using sites like www.ps3news.com and www.psx-scene.com

There may eventually be an exploit to hack newer PS3 firmwares but it is unlikely or may take a long time to be available. Your only real option if you are over v3.55 is to use one of the hardware MODs.

I did read about a method that didn't require you to open the PS3 and MOD it, but it only worked for newer models that have the NOR chip, and even then you still had to buy a specific USB device for probably around 40$ to use this method, and it's not guranteed to work above v3.70...

There are lots of information and developments every day you can read about on the sites I listed. If you're willing to spend a little extra money and be willing to learn and research the process, it is possible to downgrade v3.70 consoles to v3.55 right now. They just are not very easy, at least not yet...

RE: Risk of installing showtime? - Added by Rusty Unknown almost 12 years ago

I forgot to mention that one of the hardware chips (ProgSkeet) is developing a solderless version that won't require you to solder a lot of wires like the current version.

at the moment you can't jailbreak the latest firmware, but maybe you could use your second ps3. it needs to be on fw <=3.55.

RE: Risk of installing showtime? - Added by God Fater over 11 years ago

Is there a guide for how to jailbreak and install showtime? I don't play games at all, so don't need any other tweaks or software.
