Movie/TVshow covers/thumbnails?
Added by Kal-El Junior almost 12 years ago
Hey
I was just wondering if the devs of this fantastic piece of software are working on adding covers.
Like how multiman does.
Check this pic:

The way it works in multiman is you insert your image file and name it as "COVER.JPG" in the folder of the movie.

Yeah, I'm totally interested in this feature as well. Would this be something that could be displayed on the right side of the browser screen, with the other details of a file like runtime, codecs, etc?
Or maybe something like this: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=951350

I think this metadata presentation in form of Thumbnails and Covers is the next step for Showtime. Functionally Showtime is doing pretty fine now. Time to branch out Showtime to have some GUI enhancements.
I think showtime should be the default media player on the PS3, and maybe even someday be the default application that my (hacked) PS3 should boot into!
C'mon Showtime Developer's... Love your work and support your work!

The next phase for Showtime's Evolution. Awesome! Looking forward to new things.

Temporary solution:
You can download a cover image, and name it something like [COVER].jpg or similar so that it will be at the top of the folder. You can then select the file to view the cover.
This is good for a series/season Show with many similar episodes in one folder, but it is not a convenient solution for many different movies in the same folder.

My recommendation for starting this is by doing Showtime's own logic with,
1. Indexing a Cover Art for Movie [Name].mkv/mpg/etc = [Name].jpg/jpeg
2. Indexing a Cover Art for Folder [Folder] = Folder.jpg/jpeg
One of the most used Cover Art Generators is using "Thumbgen" and using the WDTV Templates. This is a manual process generation process. The WDTV template generates,
[Badabamba]
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.jpg*
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.mkv*
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.mkv.tgmd*
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.mkv_sheet.jpg*
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.nfo*
Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD_sheet.jpg*
folder.jpg*
Compatibility with existing Cover Art generators as Thumbgen gives us ample time to develop one of our own exclusive types!
For now, just display if any of above files are there, or if none of them exist, don't bother.
Hows that sound guys? ( I auto generate WDTV templates for all my movies and nope I don't have a WDTV! It's just a habit)

Maybe one day showtime will end up looking something like this:

now that's what I call a polished piece of software

Ugh, I would hate to have all my movies titled something like "Badabamba.2010.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.mkv". I sure hope we can utilize cover art without all that random file info jibberish inserted into the filename.
I'd much prefer embedding image files into my mkv files, rather than a secondary image file that carries the same name.

I'm not sure many containers would even allow embedding cover art so a secondary image would be needed I think. Maybe embedding only for MKV would be better.
Besides, if cover art is downloaded it could just name the image file whatever your video is titled. I don't see any reason for Showtime to fetch and rename your video files.

That's just my movie name format. I can identify all info through mediainfo if needed. My suggestion is only for temporary solution. Coming up with a proper GUI solution is going to take time and effort.
For now, any movie folder 'Nada' having
Nada.mkv : Video
Nada.jpg : Cover Art in Folder Icon
Nada.sheet.jpg : Covet Art Sheet on Side Pane
Nada.nfo : movie info dumped from IMDB
Embedding images and data into the mkv is not Showtime's job as that's upto who is creating the mkv. Showtime should not be touching or editing any file as it is only allowed to play it.
When showtime comes with it's own GUI engine, it may or may not create varios files, we will have to wait and see the design. But either way the roadmap should be for Showtime to come up with something different from other media players out there. The current user interface is awesome, neat and clean. But there is always need for Cover art and some animations to keep it in line with its competition.
I would love to see an xbmc style aeon design!!
(I was thinking maybe Showtime could create its own default Animation based on Movie Name. Showtime parses a folder's movie name, and displays the movie name in a movie title animation. Yeaay too much to ask for!!!)

When covers arrive to Showtime I'm sure it will be first class just like the rest of the application!
A huge round of applause for work well done so far!!

There are some recent commits with glx and other graphic related changes. Is anything supposed to be usable with the recent builds?

Have you any idea as to when covers will be introduced to Showtime?

I don't think anytime soon, how hard can it be to set it up so that it just looks for the jpg with the same name as the video file, it should be a priority over plugins.

I am hoping that Andreas has another private branch where he is working on album art covers. Would that be a valid hope, Andreas?

Man, I sure hope Andreas does NOT implement cover art this way. That seems like the least desirable option to me. Can you imagine trying to add cover art to a directory that contains hundreds of mkv files? What a nightmare.
Here's to hoping for a more intelligent solution, whenever that may or may not come!

I was wondering what options are being looked at (if any) for covers etc.
A completely new design/layout?
Coverflow design?
Same layout with cover images in place of the icons?
I personally think the layout is great and has room for covers and movie info in the area/box on the right of the screen when selecting the file name.
I can't wait for the day when the 'Activity' section shows cover implementation!!!!
